Commemoration Days!

You might be asking yourself why does San Antonio have a celebration starting Feb 23rd up to March 6, so many days in which different things are done. Well for Texas these days represent and honor their independence, Commemoration to the heroes that died for the cause in 1836. Each day from beginning to start has a series of events that took place and made a difference in San Antonio and Texas’ history. Just like I posted on Tuesday, one of the iconic celebrations, each day it would have a different scenario but the same spirit. Hope you have joined us through it or well, it is still not done, you can still take a ride to our city. Now let me get you in context with a little of what the history of these days is.

Mexico got independence from Spain in 1821, but after that, 11 years of conflict came up; the need of protecting the northern frontiers allowing to establish colonization laws in Texas. A lot of people moved into Texas because many colonists and native population enjoyed the semi-autonomous way of life far from Mexican capital. But this autonomy represented an issue once Antonio López de Santa Anna was elected as president in 1833. Because of his political views to centralism got Mexico in a civil war and Texas seeking independence.

For October 2, 1835, things got a little complicated since the Mexican army was sent to recover a cannon that has been loaned in town of the Gonzales. 18 men refused to hand over the cannon and they stood up fighting for it. Number later changed to 180 men protecting the cannon, the Gonzales crossed the river to find Mexican army. War started, October 2nd battle took place but Mexican army retreated since they notice they were outnumbered. Mexicans had returned without the cannon to San Antonio.

For February 23, 1836 the Santa Anna’s Army arrive to San Antonio to enter the Alamo which was fortified. Approximately 150 men and 18 cannons at the beginning of the siege, two commanders in charge of defending the area. The commander Travis answered with a cannon shot, siege begun. From that day up to March 6, different important things happened. February 24th, a letter was read addressed “To the people of Texas and All Americans in the World” while the siege continued. March 1, men from Gonzales town arrived for the battle. March 2, Texas declared its independence from Mexico. March 3, James Butler arrived to the Alamo to inform that help was in the way. March 5, Santa Anna held a council war. March 6, the Battle of the Alamo commenced, fighting lasted 90 minutes, defends had perished by daybreak.

Our history is in those days, reason for us to continue celebrating and honoring the heroes that lead us to the beautiful San Antonio we have now. You’re invited to celebrate as well, you still have a chance to get involved, tomorrow is our last day!

The Immortal 32 Arrive!

March 1, is one of our historic and important events, the immortal 32 Arrive a day to enjoy during Battle of the Alamo Commemoration, best time of the year absolutely, anniversary of the 1836 siege. The celebration and commemoration of the 32 Immortal is a symbol of Texas’ pride and independent spirit, most people would firstly remember the Gonzales “Come and Take it” cannon and the Alamo. A week to remember the final stand at the Alamo, and of course March 1st, makes us remember the immortals fighting for Texas, the courage and sacrifice done for the protection of the people.

There is a whole preparation and sponsorship to make these series of special events possible. Celebration takes place in the heart of the city, the Alamo, the sacred memorial of all those who lived, fought and died there. The heroes of the 1836 Battle is a story that needs to be spread to all visitors that come because it is part of our 300-year history of Texas Independence.

What is the story behind the 32 Immortals? On Feb 23rd, Santa Anna’s forces surrounded the Alamo Mission in San Antonio. Travis penned an urgent letter the next day to the people of Texas and all Americans in the world asking for reinforcements to defend the territory at all costs. Letter was read by the Gonzales (they were part of the first battle of Texas Revolution, when Mexican forces attempted to retrieve a cannon granted in 1831). Authorities in Gonzales had previous reports of the need of reinforcement in San Antonio and were moved by Travis’ last letter and the urgency it had. In February 27th, Gonzales Alamo Relief Force left town, originally consisted of 25 of men but it grew up to 32 by the time they got to San Antonio the 29th.

The only reinforcement that arrives where these 32 men, the Alamo had been under siege for days when they arrive but March 1st, they manage to slip through Santa Anna’s lines and make it into the fort to join the Alamo defenders. On March 6, all 213 Alamo defenders were killed including the Immortal 32 when the Santa Anna’s troops gave the final assault.

These men aged between 15 to 44 gave their lives defending a cause of Texas freedom and independence. Today a monument stands in honor of them at the Gonzales Memorial Museum.

Join us this morning to one of our most precious celebrations of freedom!

Important Bridges of San Antonio

San Antonio is full of beautiful places and sights, today we are going to learn a little of two important bridges you might want to visit during your stay in San Antonio. There is a story behind each amazing place our city has, is part of a story.

The Hays Street Bridge, a very important part of culture which deserves our admiration. Several pedestrian bridges are in the area though this one is considered the American Old West. Built in the 1800s, which was the first steel arch bridge of the country, it cross over the San Antonio River. Most of the popular attractions of the city are perfectly seen through the bridge. During the days of its building very few railroads crossing points existed but later on it became the important crossing point for travelers on horseback. The largest fort in the history of Texas, it was used in the past as a protection against hostile Indians that were attacking the city.

A memorial wall is located there for the people who served in the Alamo and a historical marker able to be seen in the water. Museums, experiences and memories are part of this historic landmark.

From the other side we have the Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge which is also a connection of both sides of Phil Hardberger Park. This bridge is a continuation of the nature of the Park. For years the Park had an obstacle that split it in two parts, thanks to the land bridge it became a one 330-acre park masterpiece. It reunites the wild and the and the people. The bridge opening was fulfilled thanks to donors a community support which made beautiful reality of the bridge.

The view it provides is really beautiful, not only for how the city looks from the bridge but because the near sight of nature is incredible. Exploring the nature inside of it, plants, live oaks, mountain laurels, different animals in the place make it really amazing.
