San Antonio is full of a diverse culture; we have people from so many different places and all of it has come to make our history so rich and attractive for people around the world to come and visit us. One of the strongest cultures and heritage that is visible in San Antonio is Hispanic, it is spread all over the city. And that gives me a reason to share with you some iconic places and characteristics that San Antonio has to offer about Hispanic culture.

A very famous places of which I’ve written before is El Mercado, located at West Commerce Street and Santa Rosa Avenue. No way you’ve gone to San Antonio and do not step by this place. It has so many stores that are full of traditional and modern Mexican handmade crafty clothing, accessories, party items, cookwares and more. Also, immigrants from Asia or Europe have added some of their taste to this Mexican Market.

The Mexican government also steps out in San Antonio and one way of doing it is through the Mexican Cultural Institute. This place hosts a variety of auditoriums and rooms. The Institute works hard on creating activities to spread the power and beauty of Mexican culture and starting with academic conferences up to photo exhibits.

The Guadalupe Cultural Art Center was founded by a group of Chicanos that were thrilled to preserve the Latinx, Chicano and native American culture. This host so many concerts, art events, an international Latinx film festival, and if you’re willing to take theater classes then this is the right place to go. Near the Cultural Art Center is the Guadalupe Catholic Church, all Spanish speaker are welcome to the place. A couple of other Hispanic places are found in the same street, do not miss getting the opportunity to adventure yourself in it.

Casa Navarro, a Historic Landmark, designated with that title by the National Park Service based on the story of Jose Antonio Navarro. He was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, a civil rights champion for Hispanic, a writer of Texas State Constitution. The meaning of his house is so powerful for all Texans, a reminder of the freedom. This historic property has been well preserved and is open for tours.

Johnny Cash’s vandalism is in the Witte Museum

The story tells that the country music legend wrote “Johnny loves Vivian” in a bench at the River Walk. Vivian was his first wife and love; he immortalizes the moment in this bench. This bench was later to museum, it is located at the Witte Museum B. Naylor Morton Research and Collection Center.

The largest Mexican market outside of Mexico

El Mercado Shopping District has a combination of around 100 shops, restaurants, and stands. It it’s the largest Mexican market established in the U.S. hosting the best Hispanic festivals ever. One of the Tallest Tower in USA

The Tower of the America was built for the 1968s World’s Fair, located at the HemisFair Park, which is 750-feet tall. It is the tallest building that San Antonio has, which means you can see the entire city if you wish to have some fun exploring and adventuring in it.

10-day Festival

The most anticipated event of the year for everyone in the city and for many foreign as well, it is the city’s most attended festival. It all started to honor the memory of the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. Second Oldest Park in the U.S.

Also considered one of the oldest municipal parks in the U.S., but for sure is the oldest in Texas. It is located north of downtown on North Flores Street.

San Antonio Museum of Art

McNay Art Museum is one of modern museums in the city with more than 700 contemporary artworks. This beautiful gallery exists thanks to Koogler McNay, who has collected all over the years art works of Diego Rivera, Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and other European and American painting from the 19^th and 20^th century.

The museum was created after her death in her Spanish Colonial-Revival home with all her collections and others have been added during the years.

Witte Museum

The Witte Museum brings to live Texas history with geological aspects of the state, nature and science. There are many engaging activities offered for kids, you need to pass by the Museum Shop, trip won’t be trip if you don´t stop by. Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio

Wimberley Zipline Adventures

It is located in the forest outside of San Antonio, this company runs 5 zip line tours per day, and a total of ten different zip lines are all over the area. The ranges of height start from 150 up to 900 feet, soaring over canyons and creeks with views of the Wimberley Valley up to The Four Winds Ranch and surrounding Texas Hill Country landscapes. You’ll be traveling at a 30 miles per hour speed on each line, but don’t worry each zip line has a guide.

Helotes Hill Country Zip Lines

Located outside San Antonio city, full of fun and excitement. A total of 4 tours are made daily, groups of 12 people in each one, which features 9 zip lines. Some of the general rules are: riders must be 11 years on behalf (it is possible for younger children with the zip tour guides), the weigh needs to be minimum of 85 pounds and maximum of 275 pounds. This is one of the most companies in San Antonio, fun, speed and nature are right the way.

Important tip in clothing is to dress comfortable for this type of activity, no dresses or skirts, no high heel shoes, flip flops or sandals, you won’t be able to take the course under those conditions.

There are many ways of getting along in travel inside San Antonio. Most visitors have easy finding their way through the city but some others do not know the city at all, so here are some tips. I know many of us travel to a city in airplane, so no car… How am I supposed to get to my rental house? That is the big question but no problem, we have encountered some options that might help you out and get all this stress out from you.

VIA Metropolitan Transit

The main public transport network in San Antonio is the VIA Metropolitan Transit and as well VIVA. You will be connected to all the popular landmarks and famous activities of the city like the River Walk or Broadway Cultural Corridor. VIVA has three more routes, VIVA centro, VIVA culture and VIVA missions which links to the most loved destinations of the city. You will be able to find all the information needed on their goMobile app, check out their website.

Ride-share & Taxi

Two of the most popular rideshare apps are Uber and Lyft but there are local ones such as Leep. You’ll find many taxis close to the popular areas of the city, also cabs at the airport, but impossible to hail on the street, most of the time it would be better if you make a previous phone call. Oh, and there are companies that will provide you a wheelchair-accessible taxi if needed. 

Bike Rentals

A fun way of getting all around downtown would definitely be riding bicycles. You can start renting your bike by downloading the B-Cycle app, or going to the station, pay for the pass and enjoy your trip through the city. Just as a reminder, cyclists have traffic regulations like motor vehicles do. The best way of getting near to adventures all over the 5 Spanish missions in San Antonio is riding a bike, and do not forget to download you bike trail map so everything goes as planned.

Car Rentals

You can go through all the city without car but of course the city structure is more into motor vehicles. There is plenty of parking areas around San Antonio so renting a car will always be a good option. Hence, pay special attention when driving on the highway because of many convergences of major freeways, we do not want you to get lost.

San Antonio Cruises

Buy tickets if you are interested in getting a little of story and ride a river boat. Go RIO has colorful cruises that travel through downtown following up all the river. There are tickets for a group and individuals. The experience is amazing, you can’t miss this part of your trip. The routes encounter the Downtown Reach and Museum Reach Sections, they run from 10am up to 9pm so you have time to plan this.

Shopping is one of everyone’s favorite activity and all over San Antonio we have so many that you won’t know what to do. Of course, every shopping center has something different some of them focus on antiques, art and home-made stuff while other of for fashion and technology. It has over 100 stores, that goes from Macy’s to H&M, 6 restaurants in case you are a little hungry after your shopping and as well the entertainment you are looking for the IMAX AND AMC theatre. Best part of it is you can take a ride on a boat, get to the place and learn about the River Center story.

Mission San Jose

It is known as the Queen Mission, the largest Mission at San Antonio established in the 1720s. Mission Valero

This is the famous Alamo, one of the favorite places for tourist to go. And well it is easy to get in love with it, because it represents the Texas Revolution, and inspiration for liberty during those times, it was founded on the 1718s. Mission Concepcion

It was built in 1755 as a church with the purpose of converting native Americans into Christianity. The design of it stays original, one of the most memorable places that represent the Catholicism coming and new traditions that we still see.

Mission San Juan

The purpose of this mission in 1731, was also to bring native Americans to Christianity, bring them to a Spanish society and also make the community self-sustainable. Remember when you visit to check on the Romanesque archway that is at the entrance gate. Mission Espada

The Mission San Francisco de la Espada was relocated in 1731, originally it was at East Texas in the 1690s. Constructed to help the Coahuiltecan groups that were living in the area. You need to check on the Espada Aqueduct and Acequia significant and important for the quality on engineering. The irrigation system is memorable, used to bring water to fields. Magnolia Pancake House

Magnolia is also known for its home-style food and like its name says the famous pancakes. The sweetest breakfast you can get around San Antonio. They started on Grayson Street, now moved to the Pearl Brewery and become one of the best restaurants in the city. You won’t be able to eat a croissant as tasty and delicious as the one in this bakery, not just their croissant but the delectable pastries with and art undeniable and unique flavor.
