Of course, the Tower of the Americas is one of the most important monuments the city of San Antonio has. Visiting our city always implies that at least you need to have the experience of one of our various treasures, and the Tower is one them. Second Annual Battle of the Boil

As you might know by now, here in San Antonio we love making festivals, shows and competitions that enrich our culture and scream out loud the beauty of our city and our people. Which is why, we have almost every month a different activity to share with you all. Our grand festival from April it has gone to the end but we still have much to do this month.

The Grand Crawfish Boil Competition is back this year for the second time, benefitting Saint City Culinary Foundation, sponsored by Lone Star Beer. Providing resources and telehealth services targeted to foodservice workers.

Chefs and contestants from Austin and San Antonio will be head-to-head to see on who has the best boil in South Texas. Of course, not only competition but everyone will be able to enjoy live music while you are in between crawfish plates and dancing.

This Thursday, April 21st, pitting local culinary pros against each other for the coveted title of Crawfish Commandants. This time it will be significantly larger, 8 teams will compete with 1,500 pounds of mudbugs at The Espee, east downtown event venue formerly known as Sunset Station.

You need your ticket so, heads up! Will have to reserve yours for the event, you won’t want to lose it so better buy yours in time. The experience of delicious food and different flavors would surely be winning for you!

Poteet Strawberry Festival

Francis Marion Poteet never thought his namesake community would have such heights of celebrity based on simple strawberry. Within a few decades the rosy red fruits would dominate the community up to inspiring to organize the first Poteet Strawberry Festival in 1948. Half century later and visitors to Poteet in April will find the three-day festival still in full swing.

Annually in April to promote Poteet’s premier strawberries, this annual berry fest now is a major tourism attraction for the state and provide scholarships to educate the youth. This event hosts continuous entertainment by nationally-known musicians, carnival, contests and rodeo performances.

It is set for April 22-24 at 9199 N State Hwy 16, in Poteet. Among the performers some are renowned country artists, including Kevin Fowler and Randall King. Each year, the Poteet Strawberry Festival Association awards approximately 30 scholarships to Poteet high school graduates. You would really want to squeeze a lot of really big things from simple strawberries.

Online tickets are available, prices from $5 to $15 per person, and it may vary if it is purchased at the festival gates, so buy yours as quick as you can. The parking inside the festival ground is free, outside they may have a fee per vehicle, you got to be urgent on the situation.

For the 2020 it was cancelled and last year it was hosted with health precautions in place to help curb. But this year it is coming back, hope you have fun during the event!

Honoring a Music Legend

April 16th is known as the Selena Day, not only in Texas but all across the world it is annually commemorated the late, Queen of Tejano for her influence on music industry on the world. It would be her 51st birthday celebration, but the day became a tribute and honor to Selena Quintanilla-Perez legacy. She remains as a legendary artist, event this year is her 27th anniversary of her untimely death, she is still one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century.

The queen of Tejano spent a lot of time in San Antonio before her death in 1995, indeed the Alamo City was as a second home for herm even had a boutique in town. Several key scenes of the biopic Selena in 1997 were shot in San Antonio, you might want to take a look to them by visiting our city. One of them was filmed on an arched stone bridge, located between N. Saint Mary’s and Navarro Street, the Bidi Bidi Bom Bom scene was shot at the Alamo.

A mural was made of her, the Christopher Montoya’s Mural, she adorns a wall of a small shopping center in the city’s Missions/South neighborhood. The other mural is located at the corner of I-10 Hildebrand, made by Alan Calvo featuring Selena with colorful Aztec-printed background. Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla took notice on his daughter’s talent, by 10 she was performing lead vocals with her siblings in the family band. Selena’s musical successes continued to blossom, for 1984 she recorded the first LP. She ended up winning 11 times since 1986 the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the year and 9 consecutive awards during 89-97. A legend who was included on Billboard’s top 100 albums with the song Amor Prohibido.
